Like pictures, flowers speak more than words. They also seem to be having something of a moment in the fashion spotlight, everyone from Oasis to Dazed and Confused have gone wild for florals. So we decided to catch up with Hattie Fox, Creative Director and Founder of That Flower Shop who have collaborated with everyone from Diesel to the BBC, to find out how she got to be so green fingered in the first place…

 How did you discover your green fingers? 

One of my earliest memories is my Dad teaching me what a root bound plant was, and apparently for my 8th Birthday all I asked my Mum for was a massive bunch of flowers (tell tale signs).

Then when I moved to London I think I felt quite out of sync – so decided to get a job working with plants because it was something I knew about. I started off sweeping the floors at a florist in Portobello, that was 8 years ago! Now we have That Flower Shop in Shoreditch, and every day I get up and I’m like ‘this is a good job to have’.

You’ve already worked with some amazing brands, who would your dream collaboration be with? 

Million dollar question! There’s so many fashion & art people that have an amazing aesthetic and really inspire me, but I’m desperate to start a flower farm, so maybe a farmer if any farmer out there will have me! Or a foodie, I’d love to grow more flowers people could eat.

 Where do you feel most inspired? 

Normally at the flower market in the morning – there’s something really nice about spending 5am with people that appreciate the same things as you. Or at my grandparents’… They’re the most loving and encouraging people in the world!

Any top tips for beautiful bouquets? 

If the colours look great together then go for it, loads of interesting leaves and herbs always bring out the best in blooms. Some of the most beautiful flowers only last a day or two, think of them like food and enjoy them whilst they last!

Few albums are as emotional as Chad Valley‘s debut album, ‘Young Hunger’. Deeply indebted to late 80s and early 90s pop and R&B, there even are hints of the Spice Girls in the song, ‘My Girl’. But there’s more to the album than retromania; Young Hunger is a perfectly crafted pop album. And it’s graced by some magnificent artists: Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Glasser and Twin Shadow all make appearances.

Few things are more inspiring than pattern. Lucky then that Patternity, one of our favourite collectives & websites, have launched an exhibition called Pattern Power that is now open and free to the public at the London Newcastle Space on Redchurch Street, London.

Set up by Art Director Anna Murray and surface/textile designer Grace Winteringham through their mutual passion for pattern, the duo have created an intense archive of mesmerising pattern whether manmade, natural or otherwise! Their work is a constant exploration into pattern and aims to increase awareness & understanding of pattern in our lives.

Pattern Power is a visually stunning exhibition of superstripes (one of summer’s biggest trends!) in every context, from the natural rings around Saturn to the sharply precise printed stripes on fabric and every other stripe in between. We could have stayed in there for hours, if you’re in London and have a couple of hours to kill, head down and check it out. The exhibition is running until Sunday April 21.

We’ve been loving the moody electro pop of Chvrches (simply pronounced ‘churches’) for some time now. They just released an EP called ‘Recover‘ on March 25th. The video above is a pretty good indication of what the band is about: industrial edge with a clean, geometric sheen. The Scottish trio is on tour this month, and you shouldn’t miss them – we certainly won’t!

We just discovered the Berlin-based Indie-Pop outfit, Abby, but unfortunately, not quite in time to catch their gig at The Borderline a few weeks ago. Luckily, they’ve visited our shores several times already, and they even recorded their new album ‘Friends And Enemies‘ in London, so we’re guessing it won’t be too long before we get to go to one of their shows. For now we’ll just keep watching this great video for their latest single ‘Streets’.
