You know that sense of sartorial doom when you have a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear? We call that fashion fatigue, and it gets the best of us when we are least expecting it! There’s only one thing to do when this style amnesia settles in, step away from the wardrobe, get a cosy blanket and settle into the sofa to watch a fabulous film that will both entertain and inspire.
We decided to go through a few of our favourites as a sort of self-help guide for those of you who may be suffering from some form of fashion fatigue as we speak! Some are golden oldies, others are a little out there – but all of them will have you running back to your wardrobe with a renewed sense of enthusiasm.
Let’s start with Love story Ali Macgraw is our ultimate style crush and in this she gives a master class in Ivy League style throughout the film. Perfect inspiration for daytime cool – add some lola&grace pearls for a bit Oxbridge elegance and never underestimate the power of a popped collar!
Then the elegant Funny face featuring the despairingly delicate Audrey Hepburn. Loosely based on the inimitable Diana Vreeland this films will teach you a thing or two about ladylike chic. Candy floss colours combine with perfectly coiffed hair to create a look sweeter than a box of macaroons (so very ss12!) which we can’t wait to emulate.
Clueless is our favourite film from our youth. And in case you hadn’t noticed, the 90s are having a bit of a renaissance both in high end and high street fashion so it’s a great sartorial resource. It’s best to focus on elements rather than entire looks. Take Cher’s knack for layering – angora cardigan over shirt and under blazer? Lovely. Or Dionne’s fashion fearlessness or Tai’s grungy touches and the overall use of colour? To-die for.
Don’t be put off by the subtitles for Daisies! This film is belly-achingly funny whilst erring on the right side of whimsy and inspiring in so many ways. From dried flowers to super-chic shifts and food fights. We always fancy redecorating our flat as well as our wardrobe after watching this one! But the girls effortlessly flit through the scenes making kitten heels and shifts look as casual as jeans.
